A prominent academic leader and researcher, Prof. Sarangapani specialises in curriculum studies, teacher development, and school education. She has authored landmark sector reports and national studies, including UNESCO's State of Education Report for India (No Teacher, No Class) and the State of Teachers, Teaching and Teacher Education Report for India (SoTTTER) 2023, The Right Teacher for Every Child. She also led the award-winning Connected Learning Initiative (CLIx), which was recognised internationally for excellence in technology-enabled education.

Her foundational contributions to institutional design include serving on the group that designed the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BElEd) programme at the Central Institute of Education, Delhi, and on the Steering Group for the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005.

Combining rigorous scholarship with active field engagement, she collaborates extensively with civil society and governments to advance foundational learning and strengthen public education systems. Her academic work and leadership remain firmly grounded in democratic values and social justice, championing inclusive, child-centred education for marginalised communities.
